On this episode of Mountain Syllabus, Miss Lewis teaches the basics of a rock climbing harness: how to put it on correctly and the different parts of it.
Hi guys today we’re going to be talking About harnesses I’m your teacher Miss Lewis and this is Mountain syllabus [Music] Harnesses are really important they hold All of our stuff but they also hold our Bodies and keep us safe as we climb up And on our way back down All right I’ve got my harness here today And you can put it on just like a pair Of pants And for this part you’ll want to keep it Nice and loose you’ll pull it up And you can grab this Buckle right here And pull to adjust it after I pull this I’ve got this nice long tail here so I Can put it through these little belt Loops here to get that part out of the Way Once it’s nice and tight you can check It with your three fingers putting it Into your waistband And you want to make sure they come out Twisted like this Next double check before you tighten Everything up that these are not crossed Over or Twisted great way you can check This out is to make sure that these Straps here are not upside down All right so on my harness here all I Have to do is hold here and tighten that Way for both of these on my leg Loops to Be nice and high on my body because once We get some weight pulling up on here
It’s going to be a lot more comfortable If they already start out pretty high up All right let’s go over the anatomy of a Harness this is my waistband I want this To be above where my hip bones are Next we have these gear loops on the Side this is where you can clip quick Draws your belay device anything else That you might need to take up the wall With you Right here in the front is our belay Loop and this is where all of our hard Gear goes into so anything that you’re Going to be clipping into like a Carabiner your ATC anything like that Always goes through your belay Loop Next kind of hidden here is my two hard Points okay this is our tie-in points um There’s one down here and then where the Belay Loop comes right up here is also Where I’m going to tie my rope into You always want to come down from the Bottom and up through the top when You’re tying your knots So these two points are important and if You ever get lost you can always just Follow wherever your belay Loop goes Next we have our leg Loops here I’ve Already tightened these to be at my size You want to make sure that they’re not Going to be twisted before you start Climbing on them In here on the back there’s one more Loop where I’m going to put my chalk bag
So now you have your harness on and you Know all the different parts of it I’m Miss Lewis and this is Mountain syllabus
